Rollin' the Dice (Tutorial)
The first level of the game takes place in a small town. The objective is to get into a warehouse in the 1990s, but the players must get the items to complete this objective by solving a number of problems around town.
The first quest is involves the two matching houses on the map in the 90s. Twin brothers live in these houses and they have been quarrelling over a gambling debt and do not speak any more. One brother stole the other brother’s lucky clover when they were little and uses it to win. The goal is to get loaded dice for the other brother so as to even the score. These dice can be stolen from the squatters living in the church in the 1990s. The brother will pay you for the dice with enough money to buy a necessary item later in the level.
The Ghost of Relationships Past
The second quest revolves around the house on the far left of the map. In the 1950s there is a young woman in the house who complains of her husband travelling all the time. If you visit the same place in the 90s, the woman lives alone but her house is haunted by the ghost of her husband. The players have to figure out what happened to the couple in the 50s that caused the 90s situation. It turns out that when the woman in the 50s met the Speech character she fell in love with her. As such, you need to convince the husband that he needs to do something so that her mind does not wander from him while he’s away.
In another quest you gain a rattle item, which you can show to the husband to give him the idea of impregnating his wife. However, while this keeps the family together, it makes the 90s wife unhappy and she wants to kill her husband.
You can get poison from the hotel. In the hotel, you get a bad vibe from the hotel owner. Upon rummaging around in the “mother’s” room upstairs, you discover a vile of poison. You can give this poison to the unhappy wife so that she can kill her husband. As a memento, she will give you the shovel that she used to dig her soon-to-be-deceased husband’s grave.
Losers and Lovers
The big store doesn't sell something we need to get inside the factory. Convince Mom and Pop in the 1950s to leave their spouses and get married to each other, forming a superstore supercouple. Once you complete the cafe quest, Mom and Pop will be alone and all you have to do is talk to them to get them to marry. Then in the future they will have a rattle that you can give to the salesman in the 50s in return for the Book of Job.
When you visit the cafe in the 90s you will see the place is overrun with punks and a real dive. The player needs to get the cafe owner in the 90s to toughen up so that he'll kick the riff-raff out and clean up the place. We learn that the 90s owner is actually one of the employees in the 50s. In the 50s, he's getting bullied by his boss (who is the husband of Mom) and therefore grows up to be a pushover. When the employee in the 50s discovers that the the owner is sleeping with Pop's wife he needs to make it public so that he is shamed and leaves the town. After the owner leaves town disgraced, convince the 50s employee to take over the business.
The Save-a-Soul Mission
Gambling den inside one of the hotel rooms is taking away people's interest in church on Sundays. Priest tells us everyone's too busy with "their sin" in the hotel down the street. Also the priest is a bit too hellfire and brimstone for everyone else to stomach. Going to the gambling den, you can't convince anyone to leave. They say "if he wants to talk to us so bad, why doesn't he come down here?"
Returning to the priest, he states that he wouldn't even know what to say to them if he did go over there. You have to find a sermon for him to bring. Find out from dialogue or by chance that the man who owns the Rich House (who is in the cafe now) is a traveling salesman. He sells really nice leather bound books from the Bible. He has three of them, and you have to do a favor for him (help save his marriage) before he will give one to you. You have to read all three for clues as to which sermon to give the priest. The solution is the Book of Job (God and the Devil gambling over a soul).
In the 90s, the church will remain intact. The priest here in the 90s is a hippie, and he gives you seeds for planting trees if you talk to him.
